I'm suprised a South Indian Vaishnava is only making this argument now. 
It has long been an article of faith amongst North Indian Vaishnavas (the 
ones who don't consider him a demon!) that Shankaracharya was "really" a 
Vaishnava himself and all this mayavada talk is just a ruse to defeat the 
Buddhists.  Shri Lalitaditya ably explains what Vaishnava actually means 
in this context.
