Namaste Aravinda ji
The images of Sri Shankara Bhagavatpada are installed within the Sringeri
Math in a large temple. Usually such altars to the Guru are present
adjacent to the moola pratiShTha which in the case of Sringeri is Mata
Sharada Devi.
In Mumbai Sharada Vidya Kendra in Chembur, a favourite haunt for me while
growing up in Mumbai, the beautiful mUrti of Sri Shankaracharya is
installed and worshipped as per Agama, adjacent to Sri Sarada Devi murti.
My recent association is with Adi Shankara Brahmavidya Peeth of Uttarkashi
where bhAShya study is extensively done, which has a beautiful mUrti of Sri
Shankara with regular Pooja and Abhishekam.
This is to say that bhAShya study and formal Pooja co-exist harmoniously
and these acharyas of Sringeri or Uttarkashi who teach bhAShya all the time
seem to see no downside to formal worship of Adi Shankara.
While I do understand the tendency to emphasise personalities over
principles, I would venture that formal worship of Adi Shankara will not
increase laziness towards bhAShya study. If anything it may help kindle
interest in the study of Vedanta.
