Mahabharata 3.40.1
The dhaatu 'hr' (to destroy, etc.) is common for both the names Hari and
Hara.  The Hari word is explained as 'hariH harati paapaani' - Hari
destroys/takes away all sins.
The same applies to the word Hara too: Here, in the Mahabharata we have a
verse that says so: Bhagavan Pinakapani, Shiva, is the destroyer of all
sins:
