My understanding is different. The text should be read as
<< नैवेह किञ्चनाग्र आसीन्मृत्युनैवेदमावृतमासीत् >>
<< naiveha ki~nchanAgra AsInmRRityunaivedamAvRRitamAsIt >>
and not as
<< नैवेह किञ्चनाग्र आसीत् >>
<< naiveha ki~nchanAgra AsIt >>.
The Bhashya then is an elaboration of this and not a refutation of the
direct meaning. This is clarified in the beginning of the Bhashya itself in
reply to sUnya vAda.
<< न, ‘मृत्युनैवेदमावृतामासीत्’ इति श्रुतेः >>
<< na, ‘mRRityunaivedamAvRRitAmAsIt’ iti shruteH >>.
This should also clarify query of Bhaskar Ji reg << The veda mantra
therefore needs to be
re-interpreted so that "there was nothing here" means "the cause and effect
were both present, but in an unmanifest form". >>.
Entire advaita sidhAnta is based on AvaraNa/veiling and vikshEpa. As per
sidhAnta, only “ Cause” is Existing . Due to AvaraNa/veiling of the same,
“effects” make an appearance and are mithya. . The effects could be
manifest or unmanifest. This extends from avyAkRta at the time of Creation
to the entire Creation itself.
