Looking from the point of utility the lump of gold and the ring are different

And that utility here is "for the sake of upAsana".

आचार्य​ while commenting on तदनन्यत्वमारम्भणशब्दादिभ्यः says:

व्यवहाराभिप्रायेण तु ‘ स्याल्लोकवत्’ इति महासमुद्रस्थानीयतां ब्रह्मणः कथयति, अप्रत्याख्यायैव कार्यप्रपञ्चं "परिणामप्रक्रियां 
चाश्रयति सगुणेषूपासनेषूपयोक्ष्यत"

How one would contemplate on the formless?  Hence, the pariNAma-vAda has to be accepted for the sake of upAsana.
