[Advaita-l] Adi Sankaracharya's bhashyas

Dear Michaelji,
My query was regarding the bhashyas or commentaries only . Some people think that Adi Sankaracharya wrore the bhashya on Svetasvatara Upanishad immediately after writng the bhashya on the Vishnusahasranama and that the commentary on the Bhagavad Gita was written only after the bhashya on Svetasvatara. Yet some other people think that Adi Sankaracharya did not write any bashya on Svetasvatara. I think there is a similar confusion on the authorship of the Narasimhatapaniya upanishad also.
As regards the Viveka Chudamani there seems to be no doubt that Adi Sankaracharya wrote the Saundarya Lahari. However it appears that the Anandalahari portion could have been written by another author.

Sunil K. Bhattacharjya

Dear Devji,
I agree. Make a respectful bow to the pandits -- but then apply the
traditional three or four guides -- scriptures, tradition, guru or living
Paramatman, and self-truth : if constant study joins your truth to the
spoken truth -- that's it !
This applies all the more to the bhakti verses attributed to Adi Shankara in
his very different guise.. myself, I once set the verse to 'Giriga' to
music, and now, dare I say it, it is as if I had had a share in that first
saying of the prayer.. what more could one ask ?
Michael

Dear Michaelji,
IMHO, under such conditions of limited scope to prove eitherway, I
believe the Shradha plays its important role - being " Guru VedAntha
VakyEshu VishvasaH ".
I just follow what my Acharyals says and that Pramanam is good enough.
I heard the same story a while ago, when a very learned scholar said
that he didn't believe Viveka Chudamani was written by Sri Adi
Shankara as well.
When H.H.Chandrashekara Bharathi Swamigal has written the commentary
for the above and affirms the author of Viveka Chudamani to Sri Adi
Shankara, I don't need any more authority (Pramanam).
Of course, sometimes it is very nice to transport oneself to the
framework of the author to get the real essence (Bhava) as well.
Regards
Dev Babu
