Yes.  In fact some Smartas have the tradition of wearing urdhvapundra 
instead of tripundra and there is nothing wrong with it.  But I am told 
there are some Vaishnavas who brand this symbol on their bodies as if they 
were bullocks not human beings.  This is avaidika and should be condemned.
